55 is a Hindi crime drama that takes viewers into the crowded and chaotic streets of Mumbai through the story of an orphaned young pickpocket. Directed by Shyam P. Madiraju, the film combines crime, romance, mystery and drama while focusing on a character who is known more by a number than by his real identity.
The film stars Emraan Hashmi as Sagar Bhai, alongside Rizwan Shaikh as Pachpan and Dhanshree Patil as Uma.
55 Movie Story
The story follows an orphaned pickpocket known simply as 55, whose number is tattooed on his arm. He works for a criminal boss and survives by carrying out small thefts across Mumbai.
At first, 55 appears comfortable with his life on the streets. But everything begins to change when he becomes connected to the daughter of one of his victims.
What starts as another ordinary theft gradually turns into a much more personal journey. The film explores whether 55 can escape the life that has been forced upon him and become something more than just a number.
Emraan Hashmi in 55
Emraan Hashmi plays Sagar Bhai, while the younger cast members carry much of the central story surrounding 55. The film’s cast and production credits list Shyam P. Madiraju as director and writer, with Shahin Khosravan also credited as writer.
Hashmi’s presence gives the movie an additional layer of interest, particularly because the film is quite different from a conventional Bollywood commercial thriller.

55 Movie Review: What Works
One of the film’s strongest elements is its Mumbai setting. The crowded streets, trains and marketplaces become an important part of the storytelling rather than simply serving as background.
The pickpocket sequences also give the movie energy. Rotten Tomatoes’ collected critic reviews specifically highlighted the robbery sequences and the film’s visual style, while another critic praised its compassion toward the characters.
The movie also attempts to balance its crime story with an emotional journey. Instead of presenting 55 simply as a criminal, the story focuses on his circumstances and the possibility of changing his life.
Where 55 Movie Can Feel Different
The film mixes several genres—crime, drama, romance, mystery and thriller—so viewers looking for a straightforward action movie may find its approach somewhat different.
The story also has a fairy-tale-like quality underneath its darker crime setting. Some critics noted this element while still finding the movie entertaining and easy to watch.
